Switches Expressive Communication
Scalable Vector Graphics
The enhanced illustrations (left) were created for an individual who was developing picture representation skills. The vector based, 2D line drawings were successful when they were made to look identical to the real object the individual was familiar with, only in 2D. The bright colours attracted the consumer's gaze and the crisp lines right to the edge of the object eliminated the depth that makes the contents of photos feel distant and murky.
Typical photos and commercial Picture Communication Symbols had been attempted with this individual before without success, likely because these images were dissimilar in colour, shape and size to the real objects the individual was familiar with.
I slowly introduced each step of the transition over a period of 6 months and measured the consumer's understanding before moving on to the next step. As the individual grasped the concept, I began to make the images more complex by gradually adding new colours and elements.
